The legend was originated in a custom of the Muisca people of Colombia,  the chief or Zipa after named El Dorado, would arrive at the sacred lake on a wooden raft with four of his priests, after being covered in gold, he would immerse himself in the water with treasures of quarz, emeralds and gold offered in adoration  to the goddess of Guatavita.
